This is the fastest and most direct route, on foot, from Matiatia to Cable Bay vineyard, Mudbrick Winery and Jurassic Ridge winery.

Location

This walk starts at the Matiatia ferry terminal, one of the key arrival points for Waiheke Island visitors.

Track Summary

The track goes directly across the reserve, up through the Forest & Bird owned Atawhai Whenua Reserve, and pops out on the road about 100m from Cable Bay vineyard.

Easy grass, gravel or dirt tracks with gentle incline. Can be muddy after rain.

Dogs allowed on lead.

The Atawhai Whenua Reserve shows the remarkable transformation since 1993 to turn deforested and degraded land back to thriving bush, filled with birdsong and life. This is a wonderful legacy of one individual’s determination and the work of many volunteers.
